Today our staff attended a conference entitled, “See Poverty, Be the Difference.” Author and keynote speaker, Dr. Donna Beegle, helped the audience gain a foundation, rooted in lived experience and research for understanding poverty. She was able to address the impacts of poverty, because for generations, Dr. Beegle’s family subsisted on minimum-wage employment and migrant work. She encouraged the audience to create programs and systems that are responsive to the needs of individuals from poverty backgrounds. Poverty is a complex issue and its solutions come from individuals who are willing to learn, understand and work together. We learned concrete tools for communicating and working more effectively with those we serve. The entire conference was very inspiring and motivational to us all.
